The following is a list of the required Minimum Qualifications and additional Preferred Qualifications for applicants to be considered by the position of Firefighter with the Nanaimo Fire Rescue Department:
Minimum Qualifications:
Legally entitled to work in Canada (ie. Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, etc.)
High school graduate or equivalency
NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter 1 & 2 Certification (Pro Board/IFSAC)
Able to pass the Firefighter Medical Examination (NFPA 1582) www.nfpa.org Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) certificate OR a University of Victoria Fire-Fit certificate, dated within the last 12 months; and complete the Multi-Stage Fitness Test (BEEP Test)
Valid BC driver’s licence (or equivalent) with air brake endorsement (Class 3)
Driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. More than six points in the past three years, as of the date of the application, will eliminate an applicant from further consideration.
No criminal convictions for offences related to the job of a firefighter
Current First Responder Level 3/OFA Level 3 or equivalent
Supporting Qualifications Current Certificates in specialty areas such as:
o AED and Spinal first aid endorsements o CPR C
o Hazardous materials o High angle rescue o Swift water rescue
o Confined space entry
o Fire service instructor
o Marine rescue
University or College diploma or degree
Experience with menu driven computer software programs
Previous firefighting experience (paid or voluntary) and training
Pleasure Craft Operator's Card
Experience in a work related to Fire Services (ex. construction, mechanical, first aid, operating large vehicles, aquatic, wildlife, etc.)
Fluency in language other than English
Community volunteer service
