The duties of a Firefighter

Firefighters are highly trained professionals, skilled in firefighting, rescue operations, hazardous material training, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents and other specialized services.

If you are considering a career with the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, the Firefighter Tasks and Duties document outlines the details of a firefighter’s responsibilities.

Abbotsford Fire Resuce Service firefighters have the opportunity to develop their skills in specialty areas including:

Aquatic rescue
Heavy rescue
High-angle rescue
Hazardous materials

Today's professional firefighter has a number of daily tasks but they are also highly trained in fighting fires, rescue operations, handling hazardous materials, confined space rescue, tower crane rescue, and providing medical care for emergencies and motor vehicle incidents.

Qualifications

Only the most qualified applicants will be chosen to move forward in the Firefighter selection process.

Minimum Qualifications

You must be able to prove you have all of the following minimum qualifications before you apply. Proof of qualifications will be requested at various stages during the recruitment process.

Minimum 19 years of age on the date of your application
Eligible for employment in Canada - You must be a Canadian citizen, a holder of a Permanent Resident Card, a Landed Immigrant or otherwise legally entitled to work in Canada (i.e., holder of a work visa).
You must provide documented proof of receiving the following inoculations:
Measles, Mumps, Rubella – (also known as MMR); we will accept childhood vaccination records and/or the results of an antigen titer test.
Tetanus/Diphtheria – (also known as Td); your most recent Td inoculation must be within the past 10 years.
Hepatitis A & B.
You must provide documents verifying you have:
A High School Diploma
or equivalency - equivalencies can include:
General Educational Development (High School Equivalency Diploma)
or an undergraduate/applied degree or journeyman certificate
or completed 2 years of a recognized apprenticeship program
NFPA 1001 Level 2 with HazMat Operations
First Responder Level 3 License or greater with Spinal and AED (e.g. EMR or PCP Licensing)
Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate (current)
Unrestricted Class 3 with Air Brakes endorsement (Air-Brakes "Automatic Only" restriction is accepted) driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than six-(6) demerits/points for the past 5 years and no present suspensions or charges pending.
Probationary or Graduated Driver’s licenses will not be accepted. Accepted licences:
BC Class 1, 2, or 3 licences with an air brake endorsement.
A clean Police Information Check as it pertains to the positon of firefighter.
Physically and psychologically fit for the positon of firefighter.

All licenses must be current through 2017. Certification is not equivalent to licensing. All costs associated with obtaining and maintaining these licenses are at the applicant’s expense.
